Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopy is a method that allows us to see into the abdominal cavity via a camera and we can therefore do some surgical procedures through a very small abdominal incision.  Using this method, our patients heal faster with less bleeding and less pain. AVH has invested in this cutting edge technology in an effort to offer a minimally invasive procedure. The following are common surgeries performed by laparoscopy:

SPAYS

Our laparoscopic equipment is a system made by BioVision which allows us to use only a single port for Ovariohysterectomies or Ovariectomies. A very small 3/8 inch incision is all that is needed and your dog will be 65% less painful than had she been spayed with the traditional technique. Laparoscopic procedures are safer because the surgeon can completely visualize the entire abdominal cavity and can watch for any bleeding from the surgical site.  A faster recovery means less down time and fewer complications for your furry friend.

GASTROPEXIES

A prophylactic gastropexy could save your dog’s life.  There are several breeds such as Great Danes, Mastiffs, Akitas, Shepherds, Wolfhounds, Dobermans, Setters, Basset Hounds, and Weimaraners that are predisposed to Gastric Dilatation with Volvulus (GDV).  This condition occurs when the stomach twists on itself, which in effect, strangles the blood supply to the stomach and spleen.  Many owners prefer to prevent rather than to cure (when their pet is in critical condition) and chose to do a gastropexy at the time of their dog’s spay or neuter.  Done laparoscopically, this can be a minimally invasive way to tack the stomach to the body wall and hopefully prevent the potential threat of a torsion.
